Score one for the Dumpster-Divers!
I thought orchids were supposed to be finicky plants...this one sure isn't. Four weeks after bringing it back from the dumpster, it's produced the bloom you see here, with a few more on the way. [1024x768, 142k]

Today's topic for discussion is...
...this misinterpretation of the famous theorem, one I like to use to summarize the business of software development (along the lines described in The Mythical Man-Month):

If an arbitrary number of monkeys, given an infinite amount of time, will eventually produce the complete works of Shakespeare, then
    (1) an arbitrary number of designers and developers, given a finite amount of time, can produce a single piece of software that works properly, and
    (2) that finite amount of time is inversely proportional to the amount of designers and developers allocated to the software.

Looking to Spring
As the current cold snap retains its icy grip on Atlanta and its inhabitants, I am starting to think about Spring and its promises of warmer weather, rainy weather, and most importantly, return of baseball and plants! More on baseball, once Spring Training gears up. For now, plants.
I've moved from my downhill-facing, west-facing apartment to an uphill-facing, east-facing apartment. While I have less vegetation to block the sun, I should also have less sun time. I really hope this doesn't dampen the plants to badly; I'll have to look up which plants prefer morning (vs. afternoon) sun.
What is doing fairly well, is the newest addition to the plant family, an orchid I found placed on the dumpster. I know absolutely nothing about orchids, other than a cursory check of the Wikipedia page a few days ago. I do know that after a month or two of sitting on the shelf, it's generating three or four blooms. So maybe I'll try cultivating some orchids this year.

The Art of Losing, Part II
In my first installment, I failed to explain my motivation for spending the better part of two weeks in a casino. I was fulfilling a self-promise I made in '04, to attend the World Poker Tour's annual Tunica event. The fun times kept rolling, the production was very interesting to watch, and I (and others) put on a fine display of losing....
