Flashes from the Past

As I may or may not have mentioned a few weeks ago, Jagger's is back in business, as a basic carryout/delivery pizza joint. I finally picked up a rectangle pizza for dinner (and breakfast); it's great stuff.

Also of note, is the presence of a 24-hour gym between this reopened pizza joint and the Kroger that anchors their shared shopping center. Back in high school, I had a key to one of these places. I'm going to sign up, and see if I can remember a routine.

The "Lidle Effect" (Junkball > Braves)

Here we go again: yet another Braves team that finds its nemesis in the person of junkball pitchers. In case you didn't hear, the Braves lost 3-2, 5-2, and 5-0 in the first three games of four, against a Pirates' starting rotation who combined for about a 4.8+ ERA coming into the series.

Barely-effective pitchers who turn into the second coming of Cy Young when facing the Braves--it's a hallmark of this decade. Four or five years ago, I described this phenomenon as the Lidle Effect, after starter Cory Lidle, then with the Reds, recorded his third or fourth convincing win against the Braves. I don't think Lidle ever posted a sub-4.5 ERA as a starter, and the guy turned into Cy Young when pitching against the Braves.

And, here we are again, losing at least two games of this series in futility, and hitting an absurd amount of double plays over the season so far, against anyone that pitches with more movement than velocity. I would love to see a breakdown of the hitting stats by pitcher's pitch distribution. I think such a view would be quite revealing.
