De-Spin: Senator Clinton is Correct.

There's been a ginormous flap over the past week, over some comment Senator Clinton made to answer the question of why she is still in the presdential race. That comment was something to the effect of "we all remember what happened in 1968," to which the "progressive" delegation has responded with shock, alarm, and the nearly unanimous consensus that Clinton has committed some form of atrocity.

I call "Bullshit" on such responses. Senator Clinton's comment reflects a valid rationale, whether intended or not. The reactions describe the comment at worst as a bounty, and at best, as a scarecrow. Simply put, these responses are a sign of both the weariness of Obama's supporters, and of the generational bias that is part of the demographicality of this Presidential election cycle.

In doing so, these Obama supporters (they're too partial to be described as critics) completely ignore the underlying truth: the faction that has run this country since 2000 has: assassinated one President Kennedy; very likely assassinated one Robert Kennedy before he could become President; has scuttled President Carter's term; has unseated at least three Governors (Davis-CA, Siegelman-AL, Spitzer-NY). This faction has meddled in our politics for decades, has infected the Republican Party since the '60s, run Congress since the 90's, and run the country outright since January 2001.

This faction is hostile to anyone that does not swear allegiance to them; and once the levers of government are finally pried from their grasp, that faction can be expected to revert back to market manipulation, targeted violence, and rhetoric-spawned attacks.

Collectively, they are our taliban. And when taliban aren't in power, they're insurrecting their way into power. That's what taliban generally do, and that's what our taliban's history shows.

And I am supposed to be surprised that our taliban will provoke or coordinate an attack on a non-taliban nominee? Like I said earlier, "Bullshit."

VPN takes out the rest of XP's network layer, and I get to save anything stored locally, reboot, and start over.

A Tale of Two Simians

The story, and resulting flap, over the bar in Cobb County and their "Curious George" Obama t-shirt, has really jammed my brain. How do I begin to sort out exactly what bullshit is in play here? Even ATLMalcontent missed the boat on this one, opting for the history/awareness angle in a response that amounts to taking the bait, and giving the 'tards much more credit than they deserve.

So, let's review: Bar owner in Cobb County prints "Obama in '08" t-shirts with a graphic of Curious George eating a banana. Potential copyright issues aside, the shirt, bar, bar owner, and county have received national press, local protests, national criticism. The like-minded people's main response to criticism of said shirt has been a cacophony of finger-pointing, claiming there is no difference between this mashup, and running joke of mashups which liken President Bush to a chimp.

My thoughts:

  • The humor kind of writes itself here. As I posted on ATLMalcontent, the Cobb Countians and their like-minded GOP bretheren are claiming that racism is now a derivative of politics, and the past 140+ years of Reconstruction, Jim Crow, de-segregation, and the resulting polarity of Atlanta metro, is some external political force that has generated racism, instead of being political effects of racial bias. That folks, is proof that sometimes, The Onion peels itself.
  • Oh yeah, whenever someone claims "Curious Obama" is on-par with "President Chimpy", that person is implicitly admitting the racist nature of the "Curious Obama" graphic.
  • The operative quote from the bar owner: "I'm saying out loud what everyone in this town whispers." This is actually true, when 'everyone' is constrained to the old money that runs that county, as buttressed by the "White Flight" of the 60's. These would be the fine, upstanding, hood-wearering klansmen of Cobb County, that have led the Republican Party since 1994.
  • That's right: remember Bob Barr and Newt Gingrich? Gingrich more or less ran the House of Representatives for several years from Cobb County, and Barr was ushered into Congress on the heels of Gingrich's efforts in 1994. So in a very material way, Cobb County (along with the rest of Atlanta's Northern Arc) are responsible for the past 14 years of taliban meddling, and 7 years of taliban control of the U.S. Hence the nickname, "Corn-Cobb" County.
  • Boy, wait 'til the mainstream press finds out about the rest of the internet. In fact, the graphic in question is rather par-for-the-course for the anonymous, online racist. It just so happens that in meatspace, we can actually infer the nature of these people, through their support of the offending graphic.
  • This episode serves as yet another reminder that demographics are still the prime motivator in this election cycle. Now that we're down to two* candidates, the demographic noise has concentrated accordingly. Our little hookers in media-land are milling around to channel whatever demographic noise is thrown their way. So, expect more (and louder) versions of this same story to play out over the coming months.
  • The actual difference between the "President Chimpy" graphics and the "Curious Obama" graphics is actually straightforward. The former alludes to both President Bush's role as Placeholder-in-Chief for our taliban (aka "Fundies"), and to the evolutionary origin of the leader of the Creationists' representative(s). The latter alludes to who Barack Obama is, regardless of whatever job he might have. As such, the "President Chimpy" graphics are semi-intelligent political commentary, and the "Curious Obama" is a direct product of bigotry.
In closing, the bar owner and the people who support him, have been caught dead to rights. The noise they make in response to criticism of their positions can be summarized as:

Hello from Turner Field

It was a great weekend for baseball, with the Oakland Athletics in town for three games. Winning two of those three was a good deal [especially when the home-plate umpire had to shave the plate, just to make it a balanced contest].

And to complete the weekend, I'm heading down to the bar to watch the final game of the World's Most Expensive Little League Series, aka Mets vs. Yankees interleague play.

Flashes from the Past

As I may or may not have mentioned a few weeks ago, Jagger's is back in business, as a basic carryout/delivery pizza joint. I finally picked up a rectangle pizza for dinner (and breakfast); it's great stuff.

Also of note, is the presence of a 24-hour gym between this reopened pizza joint and the Kroger that anchors their shared shopping center. Back in high school, I had a key to one of these places. I'm going to sign up, and see if I can remember a routine.

The "Lidle Effect" (Junkball > Braves)

Here we go again: yet another Braves team that finds its nemesis in the person of junkball pitchers. In case you didn't hear, the Braves lost 3-2, 5-2, and 5-0 in the first three games of four, against a Pirates' starting rotation who combined for about a 4.8+ ERA coming into the series.

Barely-effective pitchers who turn into the second coming of Cy Young when facing the Braves--it's a hallmark of this decade. Four or five years ago, I described this phenomenon as the Lidle Effect, after starter Cory Lidle, then with the Reds, recorded his third or fourth convincing win against the Braves. I don't think Lidle ever posted a sub-4.5 ERA as a starter, and the guy turned into Cy Young when pitching against the Braves.

And, here we are again, losing at least two games of this series in futility, and hitting an absurd amount of double plays over the season so far, against anyone that pitches with more movement than velocity. I would love to see a breakdown of the hitting stats by pitcher's pitch distribution. I think such a view would be quite revealing.

Six in a Row!

Oh, look out; the Braves are off the deck. I don't care if San Diego is the worst team in the league; the Braves rallied from behind to tie, then win, a baseball game. Not only that, they strung together some hits to put the winning run across. Pittsburgh is warming up, but I think the Pirates will see a much-improved ballclub , and they'll play four this time.

Music to My Ears

Ah, the beautiful sounds of dissonance. This double-dose involves Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales.

  • This post, over at Bernaisesource, relays the lament of the corporate PR rep, lobbying (in likely futility) against Wikipedia's Conflict of Interest policy.
  • I would normally never link to a Gawker site, but this time, the fit of indignant spite (aka "butthurt") is too much to resist. Valleywag has a bitchpiece about Wales.

Apparently, Mr. Wales has brought up quite a reputation for telling Silicon Valley to politely crawl off and die somewhere. Not only does the guy correctly segregate the corporate shills, he demonstrates the true commercial value of 'net content: zero, or next to it. I mean, if you're going to be an anti-corporation, you may as well max out the theme.

Blogger Bump!

So, I finally checked out the "Bissinger/Leitch" argument, once it became clear that episode was setting off the Journalism debate outside of the sports journo space. For all the bluster about Bissinger being a complete asshole, my main impression was:

"We've secretly replaced Bob Costas with Jim Gray Crystals. Let's see if anyone notices the difference."

I was half-expecting a nameless thug to dash out and break Leitch's knuckles with a lead pipe. For his part, Leitch handled the ambush rather well. Although, he did screw up in at least one place: Gawker sites are controlled membership, with Deadspin using postings as a form of audition. Those who can prove they've can make comments that jibe with the blog's desired 'mood' eventually join. So, the "anyone can post" comment is a sign of butt-covering.

However, if Costas/Bissinger actually had legitimate intent to begin with, they'd have wrung Leitch out with that point. They were working from a playbook (if not a script), however, so there was no actual discussion of how Deadspin sucks.

Actually, that exchange reveals their overall play here. HBO/Costas/Bissinger have used Deadspin as a proxy for sports blogs, and the blogosphere in general. Doing otherwise might have led to legitimate discussion of the topic.

Caught Wave-handed.

It was a great evening for baseball. The days' rain gave way to clear, cool skies, and instilled Sunday laziness a day early. And so, I went to the game last night.

While the score was 2-1, in the top of the 5th or 6th, fans in the leftfield corner tried to start a Wave. Now, I've recently posted a nice, long rant about the improper use of the Wave. I was warming up a live rant for this one, when I spotted the culprits--Braves staff, attempting to kick-start the misdirected cheering. Go figure. Fortunately, the wave never made it past the larval stage, dying out against the batter's eye. I think the weather made folks too lazy to bother.

And then, we started scoring in the 7th. The third time through the lineup proved bountiful, and a few runs and hits furher limbered up the crowd, who had apparently awoken during the stretch. With our team at bat, a new Wave started in its correct context; given a decent lead, an initial, weak Wave limped around the stadium, and that weak showing acted as a fuse for a shockwave the likes of which I haven't seen in years.

It was as if Turner Field was invaded by folks who knew what they were doing, and it was beautiful. Reverberating, echoing, cheering, the shockwave rattled Reds' relievers enough for Mark Kotsay to swat a two-run double, and Matt Diaz to swat a deep sac fly to center (a rare productive out for this year's team). Three RBI in all. Hats off, folks.

Turner Field: 19th-best?
Metroblogs Atlanta Has a post questioning the wisdom of an SI report which ranks "The Ted" 19th out of 30 MLB stadiums. I don't have (and don't plan on getting) a Metblogs login, so I'll comment here.

19th is rather easy to achieve, once you factor in...
  • It's Sports Illustrated. They're New Yorkers, that's -2 for any Atlanta venue.
  • It's Sports Illustrated's website. List whoring rules provide -1 for any legitimate venue, to generate "discussion", and nipple-rubs for the marketing weasels.
  • Dauler or whatever "jesters" are in our ear today. -1.
  • Mega-Jumbotron, Stupid Jumbotron games, and associated corner displays. -1.
  • Doctrinal use of noise machine. -1.
  • Aramark. -1, though the junk food has improved this year. Investigation is in progress.
So, if the Baseball Gods descended to Earth, and sent the appropriate people down river (sorry, Columbus!), then we'd rank in the 15th range or so, and that's only because New Yorkers and web lists are regularly full of themselves.

May Flowers

It's that time again...my current project just went live, and I'm looking forward to a month of intermittent problems and stand-by.

In the meantime, I'm continuing the exploration into functional programming land, with a look at Haskell. My first impression is "Holy shit!"

The Hawks have forced a Game 7, the Braves won a game, and oh boy, was there a party crowd last night. More on that, later.

Oh yeah, flowers. Thyme is blooming, garlic is blooming, and there is honeysuckle blooming on the back fence. The latter will make for some grand patio-dwelling during the next month or two.
