Tournament Reports
GenCon 2001
MilWaukee, WI
August 2 -- August 4, 2001
2 (of 3) Tournaments

Tourney: (unknown title)
Constructed (2+1)

First Round:(1vp)
(1.5VP) Me:       "Chas Does not Suck." (dom/pot weenies)
(1VP) "Gangrel Chick":       Gangrel Poke
(0VP) "Lasombrite":       Lasombra Bruise n' Bleed
(1.5VP) Joe Churchill:      Caitiff/Pander/Weenie vote deck
(0VP) Dave ____:       Ur-Shulgi and the "ThaCels"

Dave brought out something involving Assamites, Thaumaturgy, and Celerity. Whatever it was, it can't handle weenies, because the only actions Dave took were against Joe, and they only delayed the horde long enough for me to gain momentum.
To my right, Gangrel Chick brought out a bunch of weenie Gangrel, and promptly showed the hapless Lasombrite the finer virtues of Protean. A couple of titled Lasombra were sent to torpor and/or the ash heap, and Gangrel Chick gained a VP shortly afterward. However, she ran out of poke and untap in the process, and at the same time, I cycled into my dominate. So I bled through to my first VP. Joe's superior numbers kicked in, and with the absence of a voting predator, he ousted Dave with a round or two of KRCs and bleeds.

Joe and I exchanged bleeds and combats, with Joe gaining pool via Tribute/hunt turns. I went defensive, and we eventually timed out.

Second Round:(0vp)
(?VP) Jared Strait:       Tre/!Tre dom/tha and the Society
(0VP) Me
(?VP) Josh Duffin:       Aabbt Kindred intercept "Wall of Snakes"
(1VP) Jessica ____:       Big Tremere dom/tha burn 'n bleed.
(0VP) John Doe:       Goratrix!

What a wierd table. An Aabbt Kindred Smiling Jack deck, two spellchucker decks, and one Succubus/Cryptic Mission/Society of Leopold deck. Jessica got on the ground first, and nuked Goratrix once or twice. Jared kept putting Societies on my vamps, and I managed to move one of them over to one of Josh's four Aabbt Kindred, who couldn't move it anywhere without Nefertiti in play (this also prevented Jared from playing another one for a while). Once Jessica had numbers on John, she ousted him in short order.

Nobody could touch Josh's Smiling Jack, as he had 2 or 3 intercept via Mr. Winthrop, Sport Bikes, and Rumor Mill, and had Fortitude to back up the blocks. I just hung around, until Jared caught me with a 'surprise' conditioning (about as surprising as it could be from a !Tre deck). Then Smiling Jack (4 or 5 counters) ousted Jessica, and almost ousted Jared. I don't know how this one ended...

Tourney: North American Championship
Constructed (3+1)

First Round: (0vp)
(0VP) Jason Dawson:      Weenie Auspex/Guns
(0VP) Dave _____:      Ur-Shulgi and the Thacels
(0VP) Me:       Presence Crypt Machine
(2VP) Alex Harmon:      Brujah/!Brujah rush.
Jason brought out auspex minions, and equipped one of them before anyone could block. Dave brought out some huge Assamite, that was promptly sent to torpor with an Ivory Bow from Jason. I had some presence weenies, I turned down a deal to split the table 2-2 with my prey, and watched Jason give two VP from what should have been a sweep, to a weak-sister deck. After this game, I realized that ousting myself would be a viable strategy, to put a stick in the spokes of a table-split deal.

Second Round: (0vp)
(1VP) Joe Churchill:      Quentin says "No."
(0VP) "Sleepwalker":       OBF/dom/pre Spying Missions
(0VP) Me
(4VP) "The Canadian":      Malkavian Sneak/Bleed/Bounce
(0VP) "John Doe":       Weenie obf Computer Hackers

Sleepwalker was suffering from lack of sleep the previous night (hence the placeholder name), but he still bled me for 12 or 15 with stacked Spying Missions. Apparently this guy decided to try out the new OBF vamps, and guess what? They work. Sleepwalker would have ousted me if Joe had not deflected 7 or 8 bleeds of three from John Doe, ousting Sleepwalker.

My prey got a VP in the standard Malkavian cheese fashion, then ran Joe out of deflection and scored another VP. I didn't have quite enough bleed power to get through the Malkavians, so I ended up being ousted in the last 20 minutes.

Third Round: (0vp)
(0VP) Me:
(0VP) Chris Coon:       Malkavian Sneak/Bleed/Bounce
(0VP) Wayne _____:       Tzimisce block n' kill
(0VP) Jay Kristoff:       Tzimisce block n' kill
(5VP) Ben Peal:       Malkavian Sneak/Bleed

"Gideon Fontaine will use Enchant Kindred at superior..."

So I got shut out at the N.A. Championship. At least I didn't end up on the Wall of Shame. ;-)
